Lipps & Son was there, helping King Kamahmeha's Kona Beach Hotel deal with the aftermath of the devastating 2011 tsunami that hit Kona following the Japanese earthquake. The tsunami brought eleven waves that rolled through the ground floor of the hotel and shopping mall and damaged the heiau on the historic resort grounds. The lauau grounds are the site of the seat of power for King Kahameha, as he became the first leader to unify all the Hawaiian Islands.
We worked hand in hand with their insurance company to see that the hotel was able to remain occupied, and that the public spaces and sacred heiau were rebuilt in record time, with no downtime. This was the ultimate design/build job, and is one of our proudest accomplishments in our long history of difficult jobs.
The resort is the home of the Ford Ironman World Championships, held in October, and we had the hotel ready for maximum occupancy and the media spotlight such a popular event brings. The hotel and grounds were ready for prime time, and in fact looked better than before the tsunami hit. On time, and on budget, even under the most challenging conditions.
